Tiny Seeds, Serious Flavour: Meet Wadaman Shoyu Sesame Seeds

Tiny Seeds, Serious Flavour

Meet Wadaman Shoyu Sesame Seeds

Some ingredients politely sit in the pantry waiting to be invited to dinner.

Wadaman Shoyu Sesame Seeds arrive early, season the food and steal the spotlight.

These roasted white sesame seeds are seasoned with Japanese shoyu soy sauce, creating a delicious combination of toasted nuttiness, savoury umami and satisfying crunch. They may be tiny, but their flavour is anything but shy.

A pinch over rice, noodles or salad can transform an everyday dish into something that tastes remarkably restaurant-worthy—without requiring twelve saucepans or a culinary degree.

What Are Shoyu Sesame Seeds?

Shoyu sesame seeds are roasted sesame seeds seasoned with shoyu, the Japanese name for soy sauce.

The roasting develops the sesame seeds’ deep, nutty aroma, while the shoyu adds saltiness and rich umami. The result is a versatile Japanese seasoning that delivers flavour, texture and visual appeal in one easy sprinkle.

Wadaman is a fifth-generation Japanese sesame specialist established in Osaka in 1883. Its carefully controlled roasting process is designed to bring out the aroma and individual characteristics of the seeds—much like roasting excellent coffee. Wadaman describes itself as a professional sesame producer dedicated to the ingredient since its establishment.

In short, these aren’t the pale sesame seeds that have been quietly ageing beside the paprika. These are sesame seeds with ambition.

What Do Wadaman Shoyu Sesame Seeds Taste Like?

Expect a beautifully balanced combination of:

  • Deep roasted sesame flavour
  • Savoury Japanese shoyu
  • A gentle salty kick
  • Rich, nutty aromas
  • A crisp, satisfying crunch
  • Plenty of umami without overwhelming the dish

Because the seeds are already roasted and seasoned, they can be added directly to finished dishes. No toasting, grinding or complicated preparation is required.

Just open, sprinkle and accept the compliments.

12 Delicious Ways to Use Shoyu Sesame Seeds

1. Sprinkle Them Over Rice

Finish steamed jasmine rice, Japanese short-grain rice, sushi rice or fried rice with a generous pinch. Add a soft-boiled egg and chilli oil for a quick lunch that looks suspiciously organised.

2. Upgrade Your Poke Bowl

Scatter them over salmon, tuna, tofu or kingfish poke bowls. Their roasted flavour works beautifully with avocado, cucumber, edamame, seaweed and pickled ginger.

3. Finish Kingfish Ceviche

Add shoyu sesame seeds to kingfish ceviche or sashimi for a nutty crunch that complements citrus, chilli and fresh herbs.

4. Season Steak Tartare

Use them as a finishing seasoning for steak tartare. The salty shoyu and toasted sesame add depth without hiding the flavour of the beef.

5. Give Salads Some Personality

Sprinkle them over Asian slaw, cucumber salad, soba noodle salad or roasted vegetables. They provide the crunch that croutons usually promise but occasionally fail to deliver.

6. Add Them to Noodles

Use them on ramen, udon, soba, cold sesame noodles or a speedy bowl of instant noodles. Even Tuesday-night noodles deserve a little glamour.

7. Finish Grilled Seafood

Try them with grilled salmon, tuna, prawns, scallops or squid. Add fresh lime or yuzu for a bright, savoury finish.

8. Sprinkle Over Avocado Toast

Top avocado toast with shoyu sesame seeds, chilli flakes and a squeeze of lemon. It’s simple, savoury and considerably more exciting than plain salt.

9. Elevate Roasted Vegetables

They’re particularly good with roasted pumpkin, sweet potato, eggplant, cauliflower, broccolini and green beans.

10. Add Crunch to Desserts

Sesame and sweetness are excellent friends. Try the seeds sparingly over dark chocolate, caramel, vanilla ice cream or a miso caramel dessert for an unexpected salty-nutty contrast.

11. Mix Them Into Dressings

Stir them into soy, rice vinegar, sesame oil and a touch of honey for a quick Japanese-inspired salad dressing.

12. Put Them on Eggs

Sprinkle over fried eggs, scrambled eggs, omelettes or tamagoyaki. Breakfast will immediately appear far more sophisticated.

Small Ingredient, Remarkably Big Impact

Wadaman Shoyu Sesame Seeds prove that a finishing ingredient doesn’t have to be complicated to be memorable.

Roasted, nutty, salty and gloriously crunchy, they can transform rice bowls, noodles, salads, seafood, meat and vegetables with one simple pinch.

Although we should warn you: once they enter your kitchen, plain sesame seeds may begin to feel slightly underdressed.
