Understanding the Stains

Olive Oil Stains

  1. Characteristics: Greasy, translucent marks.
  2. Challenges in Removal: Oil-based stains can penetrate fabric quickly, making prompt attention crucial.

Ghee Stains

  1. Nature of Ghee Stains: Thick and greasy, akin to butter stains.
  2. Factors Influencing Stain Removal: Ghee's consistency can pose challenges, requiring specific treatments.

Chilli Oil Stains

  1. Unique Challenges: The combination of oil and potential colorants in chilli oil.
  2. Potential Fabric Damage: The risk of setting the stain due to the presence of vibrant spices.

Quick Action is Key

Importance of Immediate Attention

  • Swift responses can prevent permanent staining.
  • Avoid common mistakes such as rubbing the stain, which can embed it further.

Avoiding Common Mistakes in Stain Treatment

  • Steering clear of cold or very hot water, which can set the stain.
  • Reading fabric care instructions before attempting any stain removal.

General Pre-Treatment Steps

Blotting the Stain

  • Gently blotting (dab do not scrub) the stain with a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb excess oil.

Avoiding too Much Heat

  • Refraining from the use of hot water or hot air in the drying process, but use the warmest water you can to wash out the stain without ruining the cloth to break down the oil molecules.

Identifying Fabric Care Instructions

  • Understanding the fabric's tolerance for various stain removal methods.  Best to test in an inconspicuous place if possible

Preventing Set-In Stains

Quick Responses to Spills

  • Addressing spills immediately to prevent the oil from setting into the fabric.

Laundering Techniques for Residual Stains

  • Choosing appropriate washing cycles and detergents to tackle any remaining traces.

Using a cloth as close to the same colour as the stained cloth as you can (i.e., don’t use a bright yellow cloth on a white garment), work some dishwashing liquid into the stain from the outside edge of the stain toward the centre (dab and do not scrub).  Do this from the underside of the cloth where possible to push the stain out.  Leave it to soak for 10-15 minutes in warm water so as not to set the stain and then wash in the hottest water that the fabric care label allows.

Carefully take off any Flakes, Seeds or Crispy bits with a clean butter knife, soak up any excess oil with a clean cloth, then follow same instructions as for olive oil stains.

Noting that a Chilli Oil Stain might contain colour, you might add a little warm water to the dishwashing liquid to help work it in.

Scrape off excess Ghee, Pre-treating with dishwashing liquid or Stain-removing Agents such as Baking Soda to absorb  and then follow the other instructions for oil stains.
